Personalist ruling parties in democracies

چکیده
This study introduces a new data set on personalism in ruling parties across the world’s democracies. We conceptualize party as extent to which are vehicles advance leaders’ personal political careers such that leader has more control over than do other senior elites and compare this concept with related ones. After describing measurement strategy demonstrating reliability validity, we show global historical patterns of past three decades. then use measure examine whether personalist shape two outcomes relevant quality democracy: polarization citizen satisfaction democracy. when leaders backed by win power, increases; not find influences support for democracy, however. Our findings suggest election supported sets motion meaningful changes, though all domains observers have proposed. close discussing additional areas our can be used future research.
